For some loose definition of “D-backs”, anyway!
We’re deep into Hall of Fame season, with the results of this year’s ballot scheduled to be announced on Tuesday. As we discussed yesterday, there are a couple of players with Diamondbacks connections on the ballot this year, though it would be a major surprise if they were to remain on it for 2025, never mind get elected. But I thought for this week’s Sporcle, we could go through the ballot over the years and see how many of the players to have appeared for the D-backs we can remember. Now, “appeared” is very relative. There’s at least one player here who played in exactly one game for Arizona. But their presence on the Hall of Fame ballot should indicate we’re taking significant careers in the majors.
It did require manual research, rather than a quick search on Baseball Reference. This definitely introduces the possibility of human error, since I ended up typing in players’ names to Sporcle manually. I already caught one embarrassing but slightly amusing typo. There may be others. I may have missed some whom even I forgot ever pulled on a D-backs jersey. So I apologize in advance. This is a tough one. Yesterday’s article might help, as might the year given – the first on the HOF ballot, from which you can work out when they stopped playing in the majors. 41 players in all, and I think if you can get one-third of those, you’re doing well, despite the fact I’m giving you initials as a hint (again: possible typos!).
As usual last names only are fine. The quiz is below, or at this link for those on mobile.
